Oh never mind that spill, have you seen our killer website?

Purchasing top of the fold sponsed space on Google search result pages is nothing new. It is one of Google's cash flow rivers. For example, if you type in "car accident" and  lawyer you are likely to get a firm in your area that does personal injury law, in the top sponsored area of the page.
A new wrinkle is BP has bought a ton of search word/placement re the oil spill as a damage control measure. The sponsored links take you to one of their PR pages.

Will this be a common tactic soon for damage control by corporations and well funded politicians? Perhaps in a Gibsonesque turn, a well funded terrorist will do the same for relevant search terms, prior to a mass terrorism act? How about a government doing so prior invading someone or some other act of state violence? Stay tuned...exciting times eh?
